Home EV Charger Installation

Plugging an electric car into a regular wall outlet works, but slowly. A Level 2 charger on its own circuit is what makes charging at home practical, and that is the job behind EV charger installation in Greeneville, TN. GPM Electrical installs home chargers for Greeneville and Greene County drivers: we check your panel, run a dedicated circuit, mount the charger, and test it before we leave.

Level 2 chargers, explained

A Level 1 charger uses a standard 120-volt household outlet. It adds only a few miles of range per hour, so it works for light daily driving but can be slow if you drive a lot. A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit, similar to the one a clothes dryer or electric range uses, and charges much faster. That is the type most owners install at home.

Most EVs come with a cord for a standard outlet, and some come with or support a Level 2 cable. A Level 2 charger can be a plug-in unit connected to a 240-volt outlet or a hardwired unit connected directly to the circuit. We can talk through which one fits your car, your garage, and how you drive. If you have already bought a charger, we can install that one. If you have not, we can help you pick the type that matches your car and your panel.

Will my panel handle it?

This is the question to answer first. A charger is a big, long-running load, and it can run for hours at a time. Before we install, we look at your panel: how much room is left, how large the service is, and what else the house runs. In many homes, the panel has enough capacity for a charger as it is. In others, especially older homes with small or crowded panels, the better answer is a panel upgrade first, or a charger set to draw less power.

We tell you plainly which case you are in. We do not sell you a bigger panel if you do not need one, and we will not hook up a charger to a panel that cannot safely carry it.

Garage and driveway installs

  • Attached garage: usually the simplest job. We mount the charger on the wall near where you park and run a dedicated circuit back to the panel.
  • Detached garage or shop: the circuit may need a longer run, and sometimes a subpanel at the building. Our garage and shop wiring page covers that part of the job.
  • Driveway or carport: the charger and wiring have to be rated for the weather, and the cable path needs to be planned so it does not become a trip hazard.
  • Rural lots: a longer distance between the panel and the parking spot can mean larger wire, which affects the plan and the price.

Chargers installed outside need weather-rated equipment and the right protection. We choose parts that match where the unit will live.

What affects the cost

We do not publish a flat price because each house is different. The things that move the price most are the distance from your panel to the charger, whether the panel needs work, how the wire can be run through the house, the charger you choose, and whether a permit is required. You get a clear price before any work begins.

Expect a service-call fee on diagnostic visits; we explain it when you reach us. For a charger job, a few photos of your panel and the parking area often let us give you a good idea over the phone.

Permits and inspection

A new 240-volt circuit is the kind of work that can require a permit. The rules depend on whether you live inside a city or in the county, and they differ from place to place. We confirm what applies to your address before the job starts.

  4. You can pay by cash, check, or Cash App.

Questions

EV charger questions

Straight answers about pricing and how we work. Don’t see your question? Call Nick.

Do I need a panel upgrade to charge my EV at home?

Not always. It depends on the size of your service, how much room is left in the panel, and what else the house runs. We check before we quote and only recommend an upgrade when it is needed.

Can I just use a regular outlet?

You can charge on a regular 120-volt outlet if your car came with that cord, but it is slow. Make sure the outlet and circuit are in good condition, because charging runs for many hours. Many owners move to a dedicated 240-volt circuit for daily use.

Can you install a charger in a detached garage?

Yes. The circuit has to travel farther, and sometimes the building needs its own subpanel. We plan the route and the wire size, and we explain what the job involves before we begin.

Do you install any brand of charger?

We can install the charger you already bought if it is a standard Level 2 unit, or help you choose one. If you are unsure, tell us your car's make and model when you call.
