Electrical Wiring for Garages, Shops & Home Additions

New space needs new power. Whether you are building a detached garage, setting up a workshop, wiring a barn, or adding a room to your house, the electrical plan comes first. GPM Electrical installs new circuits, subpanels, and outdoor service for garages, shops, and additions in Greeneville, TN, and across rural Greene County.

  • Detached garages & workshops
  • Home additions & remodels
  • Porches & outdoor circuits
  • Permits pulled when required

Nick Foster has done this work for local homeowners, and his own Facebook page shows garage and workshop wiring jobs. Here is what these projects involve and how to plan one.

Detached garages and workshops

We ran electrical service to a large detached garage for a Greene County customer. A detached building usually needs power from the house, which means a feeder cable or conduit, a disconnect, and often a subpanel in the building. Once the subpanel is in, lights, outlets, a garage door opener, and shop tools each get their own circuits.

If you plan to run a welder, an air compressor, or a table saw, tell us before we plan the feeder. Big tools need the right circuits and a feeder big enough to carry them. Starting with the load list saves you from tearing open walls later. Our guide on running power to a detached garage or shop walks through the planning questions.

Home additions and remodels

We changed a fuse panel to breakers for a customer and ran new electric to an addition in the same job. New rooms bring new circuits for lighting, outlets, and heating and cooling, and your existing panel has to be able to support them. Sometimes that means a larger panel, and sometimes a subpanel in the addition. See our electrical panel upgrade page if your panel is full or old.

If you are working with a builder, tell us your timeline. We can rough in the wiring before the walls close up and come back for the finish work.

Covered porches and outdoor circuits

We ran new electrical service to a covered porch, with lighting and outlets rated for the weather. Porches, patios, decks, and yard areas need wiring and parts built for damp locations, with GFCI protection where required. If you want a ceiling fan, outdoor lights, or a hot spot for a grill and tools, we plan the circuit around what you will plug in. See our lighting and ceiling fan installation page for fixtures.

Barns and outbuildings on rural Greene County land

Out past Mosheim, Tusculum, or Baileyton, the walk from the house to the barn can be long. Distance changes the wire size, the trenching plan, and the cost. Underground runs need the right cable or conduit, buried to the right depth, and overhead runs need clearances. A barn that only needs lights and a few outlets is a different job from one that runs equipment. We ask about what you will use and size the feeder to match.

Planning: what to decide before we run power

  • What you will run. List the tools, heaters, lights, and outlets you want, now and in a few years.
  • Where the panel or subpanel goes. It needs working space and easy access.
  • The route. Overhead or underground, and what is in the way: driveways, trees, septic lines, rock.
  • Timing. If concrete is being poured or walls are going up, call first so wiring can go in at the right moment.
  • Permits. New service and subpanels typically need a permit and an inspection. We confirm what applies where you live.

We give you a price before we start. There is a service-call fee when a visit is needed just to look, and we explain how it works when you call. We take cash, check, and Cash App.

Questions

Garage and addition wiring questions

Straight answers about pricing and how we work. Don’t see your question? Call Nick.

Does a detached garage need its own panel?

Often, yes. A subpanel at the garage gives you a shutoff and room for circuits. What is required depends on the setup and local rules, and we confirm before we start.

Can I run power to my shop myself?

Some homeowners do their own work where the rules allow it. Trenching, feeder sizing, and connections at the main panel are not beginner jobs, and mistakes can cause a fire. Read our guide on electrical permits in Tennessee and call us if you want it done right.

Do you wire new additions for builders?

Yes, including rough-in before walls are closed. Call and tell us the schedule.

How do I pick a feeder size for my shop?

It depends on the tools and how many run at once. Give us your list, and we will size it. We do not guess.

Can you do the whole job in one visit?

Small jobs, yes. A trenched feeder to a detached building usually takes longer and may need an inspection between steps.
